Decentraland is one of Ethereum’s early metaverse pioneers. Here’s a quick rundown of its origins and evolution!
For the realm of Non-Fungible Tokens, 2017 was a watershed moment. These unique tokens enable you to acquire title deeds to a wide range of digital assets and trade them on decentralized exchanges. LarvaLabs and their CryptoPunks were the most well-known (some of which are now trading for several million dollars).
But that was before Decentraland: the project raised $26 million during its initial coin offering (ICO) on August 18th, with the goal of establishing a virtual planet in which each plot of land would be an NFT, and the owners would have complete creative power.
Decentraland’s main currency is the $MANA token. In a nutshell, the idea entails establishing a “metaverse” (or virtual world) that is open to everyone and runs on Ethereum.
Decentraland enters the NFT market as the first-ever virtual world
Decentraland is made up of 90,000 LAND plots, each representing a 16x16m space, with 34,356 individual plots sold during the pre-sale and the balance reserved for the project’s shared infrastructure. Today, these can be seen as highways or community locations, such as Genesis Plaza, where people spawn when they first arrive. During major events like Halloween and Christmas, the other zones are frequently used to hold quests.
The Foundations
It’s January 2018, and the first presale of LAND has just finished being distributed. The crypto market has crashed over the last two weeks and now is the moment to find strong standards rather than party. By laying the groundwork for its metaverse, Decentraland will be able to provide these milestones to its community throughout the year. Everything has to be constructed from new, including a nice marketplace for investors, the construction of a governance system, the sale of the remaining LAND, and, most importantly, developer tools.
Following the distribution of the LAND, the final version of the land exchange marketplace was launched, allowing investors to speculate on the future worth of their digital assets.
Inauguration and Logo
The only requirement for entering the closed beta was to create an avatar and, more importantly, give it a name for a fee of 100 MANA. Many invitations were given out throughout July so that early adopters may sample Decentraland before anybody else and assist in the finalization of its development.
The year 2019 comes to a close with two improvements that include interactions in the environment and with items, as well as the ability to construct simple quests directly from the Builder.

2020 was the year of decentralization and expansion
In terms of openness, decentralization, and partnership development, the year 2020 was highly rich and diversified for Decentraland. The project entered open beta in February and subsequently established governance in the form of a DAO.
A virtual festival was held to commemorate the opening and welcome the numerous newcomers, with $MANA up for grabs as well as exclusive avatar accessory prizes. This initial wave of distribution for NFTs to customize a virtual figure may appear benign, but it heralds the start of a market brimming with virtual apparel and accessories of all types.
Continuing its momentum and capitalizing on the public’s renewed interest in cryptocurrencies, the year 2021 began with the historic announcement in January to work with Atari to develop an area dedicated to the retro brand’s different vintage games. It is possible to earn rewards not only from Decentraland but also from external projects that have erected structures and developed games to promote their ideas or projects by accomplishing simple chores or solving puzzles.
Decentraland, like the rest of the NFT ecosystem, had a surge in activity in March.
It’s 2022, and the Decentraland marketplace is the one-stop shop for the best digital assets; you can access them on the marketplace.
