All OpenSea users will be required to move their existing NFT listings to a new smart contract as part of the scheduled upgrade.
OpenSea, the most popular NFT marketplace, has rolled out an upgrade to its smart contract, a bold step to remove the inactive listing on the marketplace. The upgrade aimed at delisting inactive NFTs will require users to migrate their NFT listings on the Ethereum blockchain to the new smart contract.
Key Takeaways
- What the migration is all about and how it affects your listings
- How to migrate your listings
- What will happen if you miss the migration window and duration
A tweet posted on the OpenSea Twitter page confirms that users can start migrating their listings and have one week from Feb 18 to Feb 25. Any listing not migrated before 2 pm ET on Feb 25 will expire, but those who miss the migration window will be able to relist the expired listing without charges.
“This new upgrade will ensure old, inactive listings on Ethereum securely expire and allow us to offer new safety features in the future.”
After the successful migration of listings, the original date of posting will be displayed on OpenSea. OpenSea will not charge gas fees for NFT migration during this phase but will invalidate the old Ethereum-based smart contract, essentially ending the old offers.

“During this migration period, old offers on items will expire, and offers made on the old smart contract will become invalid.” To migrate your NFT listing: follow the steps below.
- Navigate to opensea.io and click on Migrate listings.
- Click on confirm button on your item to migrate the listing.
- Sign a transaction in your wallet to complete the process. The transaction doesn’t require a gas fee.
- View the listing with a new expiration date.
New information will be provided in your wallet Signature Request to migrate listings as part of the contract upgrade. Don’t be worried if you don’t see the Sign button right away. In most cases, you’ll only have to scroll down until it appears in the wallet extension window.
