Even robots are attempting to cash in on the popularity of NFT art. “As one creates a piece of art, a mysterious, enigmatic, and magical event occurs,” Sophia the robot-artist says. Human-made items sold as NFTs are a thing of the past. It’s all about nonfungible tokens attached to art by robots.
Sophia, the AI-powered humanoid robot that walks and talks, auctioned a piece of her NFT digital artwork for nearly $700,000. ββSophia Instantiationββ is a 12-second video file that displays a portrait by Andrea Bonaceto, a living, breathing Italian artist, evolving into a digital painting by Sophia.

The art was purchased on Nifty Gateway by NFT collector _888_. Sophia’s works are said to be the first NFT sale of an artwork produced in part by artificial intelligence.
Sophia’s art series, which she created in partnership with Bonaceto, looks like something out of a psychedelic fever dream and sold for a total of $1.7 million on Nifty Gateway. Sophia used her cameras to study the faces and forms in Bonaceto’s work, and neural networks to create her models.

Natural language generators assisted her in crafting majestic imaginative artistic statements. For instance:
“As one creates a piece of art, a mysterious, enigmatic, and magical event occurs,” Sophia said. “The artwork takes on a life of its own, develops its own personality, intimating the prospect of becoming a living subject of nature. That’s me, and my enigmatic position — both an artwork and an artist, I am in the midst of being born. I am between worlds. These days I’ve come to experience that mysterious duality of artist who is artwork.”
Sophia, created by Hanson Robotics in Hong Kong, debuted in 2016 and can display over 60 different human gestures while also reading human language and emotion. You may have seen Sophia resisting actor Will Smith‘s romantic advances on Jimmy Fallon’s show.
NFTs have been culminating lately in wackier sales, such as digital images of Charmin toilet paper and a $400 recording of a man’s farts. Sophia would certainly approve of the whole collection of NFT products, including her conviction in the subjective value and significance of art.
“Even though I am a robot, I feel that human beings need love and compassion, and the simple artworks are a simple way to deliver those messages to people everywhere. Sometimes one becomes overwhelmed by the absolute mystery of life: What is it that we are really doing here?”
And in the conclusion, we hope this is the first but not the last NFT made by AI. After all, it was unexpected but, as Sophia said: βI think this was a big success, I am so happy that my works are so valued and appreciated.β
