Atari, the legendary video games pioneer, is celebrating its 50th anniversary by releasing loot boxes combined with NFTs.
The firm is in partnership with Republic Realm, one of the prominent developers of the NFT ecosystem and metaverse. The partnership has come up with the idea to sell an NFT collection titled ‘GFTs’
The collection is said to feature giftable NFTs which will first be presented as gift-wrapped boxes with zero knowledge of what the boxes contain. Atari claims the ‘element of surprise’ makes the giftable NFTs ideal for gifting to others. On a chosen date, the NFTs will automatically unwrap to unveil various NFTs that are established on titles from Atari’s history of 50 years.

Buyers can then check out their GFTs to know if they are epic, rare, or common. Based on the collection’s website, buyers have below a 5% chance of getting a rare NFT, and below a 1% chance of getting an epic NFT. This rarity strategy is to motivate people to buy more GFTs to improve their chances of getting a rare or epic NFT. The website also promises buyers who purchase more than four GFTs the opportunity to buy a surprise GFT.
Every GFT holder will have the chance to compete in several gaming competitions while the highest scorers will gain access to unique rewards. GFT holders will also gain access to Discord servers where they can exchange and trade their GFTs.
Atari also promises that every GFT holder is guaranteed access to plenty of what is to move on the Metaverse. However, the company gives the specifics of what to come or an explanation of their metaverse.
Wade Rosen, the CEO of Atari in a statement released affirmed that the Atari brand is naturally linked with video games. And with the emergence of the metaverse, video games have become the backbone of the virtual reality world. Therefore, what better way to celebrate Atari’s 50th anniversary if not to lead gamers into a new age of technological innovation.
Presently, several gaming companies have begun to sell digital items as NFTs. Companies like Ubisoft and Konami have also joined the NFT bandwagon. So, it’s evident that the rate of adoption of NFT in the gaming space is gradually growing.
However, a lot of developers, gamers, and gaming communities are still opposed to the whole Integration of NFT in the gaming scene. Many of these opponents have cited reasons such as the high carbon footprint of NFT production and the cynical implementation of NFTs in the gaming space.
